The in-run coach and extending a run
While you run with your phone, the coach stays mostly quiet. It turns up at a few moments with a line or two, and otherwise leaves the screen to the route.
When does the coach speak up?
A coach moment appears as a card above the controls on the phone's run screen, with a light tap from the phone as it arrives. Each kind comes at most once per run:
- When you come within about 80 metres of a landmark or coffee shop marked on your route.
- At halfway, with a short line to keep you going.
- When your pace over the last 30 seconds is more than a quarter faster or slower than usual. It compares against your pace from earlier runs, so it won't happen on your first.
Tap the card to dismiss it. Otherwise it goes by itself about 15 seconds after the coach finishes writing.
What are the limits?
Coach moments are text on the phone's screen. Nothing is read aloud, and they don't appear on Apple Watch.
They need a data connection. If the coach can't be reached, the card disappears and that moment is skipped for the rest of the run.
They show on the run screen, so you won't get them while the phone is locked.
Nothing fires while you're paused.
Does the phone give spoken turn directions?
No. On the phone, the next turn and the distance to it sit at the top of the screen, and the street after it underneath. If you leave the route, the top of the screen tells you which way to head back, such as "Turn around".
Spoken turns are on Apple Watch. Choose Watch or Headphones on the watch's start screen, or switch Spoken turns off on its Voice page. If you pick Headphones and they aren't connected, the turn isn't spoken, though the watch still buzzes. Apple Watch has the details.
Can I extend a run while I'm out?
Not from the run screen at the moment. If you want a longer run, ask for the distance before you start. Asking for what you want covers how.
You can always keep going past the end of the route. The run keeps recording until you finish it, and the extra distance counts. Once you're off the line, the screen may point you back towards it, which you can ignore.
Remember the route is a proposal built from map data. Follow local signs and closures over the line on the screen.
